The circle of homelessness - St. Petersburg

ring of fire

picture taken by Nadezhfida Davydova

The picture shows Arcady Tyurin of St. Petersburg’s Street Paper ‘Journey Home’ in a public performance piece. For Russians, access to social services is dependent on registration at an address. St. Petersburg has at least 54,000 unregistered individuals living in the city. To be registered you have to have proof of past residency, and without this you cannot get access to jobs, healthcare and other necessities to live. If you cannot get a job you cannot get an address. This means you cannot get registered. This is the vicious circle of homelessness in Russia.

In this short podcast interview, Arkady Tyurin of ‘New Social Solutions’ talks about new ’surviving technologies’, solutions to tackling social exclusion within St. Petersburg’s unregistered population.

Misako Ichimura

Hello from Osaka

Thank you for the opportunity to get involved to the festival. We wish the movement of international homeless festival could spread wider across the borders. -coco room image 1about Koe to Kotoba to Kokoro noHeya (the Room of Voices Words and Hearts=Cocoroom)Non Profit Organization Cocoroom have made efforts to introduce social issues to the public and we have specialized our activities in art. In our headquarters Cocoroom located in Shin-Sekai region, Osaka in western Japan, we have unique guests everyday such as artists, homeless people, handicapped people, people Not in Employment, Education or Training, and people who have difficulty to be socialized. coco room image 2Cocoroom has been the place we can talk face by face, and that have created a lot of interesting art projects under the question “How can we become socially recognized?” Each of those movements are small, however, we hope it would give each person a warm embrace of heart to achieve wisdom of life.
